6 Days from Marrakech
Day 1: Marrakech – Ouarzazate – Dadès Gorges
Our journey commences from Marrakech towards Dadès Gorges. We traverse the Tizi-n-Tichka Atlas pass (2260m), enjoying expansive mountain vistas, en route to the traditional High Atlas Berber village of Telouet. Here, we embark on a guided tour of the Kasbah of El Glaoui, once home to a notable War Lord and Pasha of Marrakech. Continuing our adventure, we visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ait Benhaddou, an impressive fortified village (ksour). Our lunch awaits either at Ait Benhaddou or Ouarzazate before we press on to the tranquil setting of Dadès Valley, where we will spend the night in a riad or hotel.
Day 2: From Dadès Gorges to Merzouga
Following breakfast, we journey from Dadès Gorges towards the Saharan expanse of Merzouga. Along the way, Berber villages dot the landscape, passing through Tinjdad, Jorf, and Erfoud, where the beginnings of the Saharan Oasis of Tafilalt can be felt. Our path then leads us to Merzouga, where we dine and lodge in a hotel near Erg Chebbi, listening to enchanting Berber music.
Day 3: 4×4 Desert Expedition
Morning brings our exploration of the Erg Chebbi dunes. We visit a Berber dwelling, experiencing the rhythms of Gnawa music originating from Ghana and Sudan. Exploring deserted mines, encountering Berber nomads, and traversing palm tree oases fill our day. Following lunch in Merzouga, we embark on camelback for a sand dune adventure. Our evening is spent in an equipped camp amidst the Sahara, capturing stunning sunset and sunrise moments. We retire to nomadic tents after witnessing the beauty of the desert night.
Day 4: Merzouga – Ouarzazate
After witnessing the sunrise, we return to Merzouga for a refreshing shower and breakfast. Our journey then leads us back to Ouarzazate, with opportunities to browse and purchase souvenirs like fossils, carpets, and leather at Berber shops along the way. Arriving in Ouarzazate in the afternoon, we settle into our hotel for the night.
Day 5: Ouarzazate – Marrakech
Departing Ouarzazate in the morning, we revisit Ait Benhaddou for lunch and further exploration of this renowned UNESCO site, famously featured in numerous films, including the acclaimed Gladiator. After lunch, we begin our return journey to Marrakech via Tizi-n-Tichka, arriving in the evening.
Day 6: Day Trip to Essaouira
Following breakfast, we depart Marrakech for a scenic three-hour drive to Essaouira, a coastal city celebrated for its rich Moroccan culture, historical significance, and picturesque landscapes. Highlights of the day include visits to landmarks such as the Skala de la Ville and lively Place Moulay Hassan, as well as strolling through bustling souks and witnessing the vibrant harbor activity. After a full day of exploration, we return to Marrakech.
